The Machines vs. the Archive: We Pitted AI Image Generators Against Our Top-Rated Free Clipart Sites for 30 Days

AI image generators are everywhere right now. Your cousin is making photorealistic hot dogs on the moon. Your neighbor is selling 'AI art bundles' on Etsy. So when readers kept asking us whether they should ditch the free clipart sites we rank and just generate everything instead, we figured the only honest answer was to run the experiment ourselves.

For 30 days, we gave both camps the same five assignments — the exact jobs our audience actually does every week — and scored each on editability, file formats, licensing clarity, and whether the final product looked any good.

The Contenders

On Team AI: a mainstream text-to-image generator, a vector-focused AI tool, and a budget freemium generator with daily credit limits.

On Team Clipart: five sites from our Top 100 rankings, including a long-running education-focused library, an SVG-heavy crafting site, and a public domain archive.

Task 1: Classroom Worksheets

Our test: a third-grade fractions worksheet with a pizza theme, built in Google Docs.

The AI tools produced gorgeous pizzas. Too gorgeous, actually — one came out with photorealistic pepperoni shading that looked out of place on a worksheet and printed muddy on a school district's ancient laser printer. And because AI outputs come as flat raster images, we couldn't recolor the crust or remove the background without extra software.

The clipart sites won this round going away. We grabbed a simple flat pizza SVG, recolored it in seconds, dropped it into the doc, and it printed crisp on a 20-year-old copier. Teachers, this is not a close call.

Winner: Clipart sites

Task 2: Cricut Cuts

Here's where things got interesting. AI generators don't cut — they render. Every AI image we fed into Design Space needed manual background removal and vectorization, and even then the cut lines were jagged around fine details.

Meanwhile, the SVG libraries in our rankings delivered files that loaded straight into Cricut Design Space with clean, weldable paths. One vintage-style monogram frame cut perfectly on the first try.

If you own a cutting machine, AI art is a detour, not a shortcut.

Winner: Clipart sites, and it wasn't close

Task 3: Etsy Mockups

Finally, a round for the machines. We needed a soft, aesthetic background scene for a product listing — coffee shop vibes, blurred bokeh, warm tones.

AI nailed it in under two minutes. Clipart sites simply don't have this kind of imagery; you'd be hunting stock photo libraries and paying per image. For atmospheric backgrounds and lifestyle scenes, generating beats searching.

One caveat: check Etsy's current policies and the generator's commercial terms before you list. Terms have shifted multiple times, and 'AI-assisted' disclosure rules vary by category.

Winner: AI

Task 4: Church Bulletins

Bulletins need two things: clipart that prints well in black and white, and artwork that won't raise eyebrows with the church office.

AI gave us a dove that had, we kid you not, six wing feathers and an unsettling halo. Regenerating took credits. The public domain archive, on the other hand, had decades of clean line-art doves, crosses, and seasonal borders — all with ironclad public domain status, which matters when a volunteer is handling the printing and nobody wants to think about licensing.

Winner: Clipart sites

Task 5: Birthday Party Prints

Cupcake toppers, a banner, favor tags — a full party set for a dinosaur theme.

This was nearly a tie. AI generated a charming cartoon dino set, but we needed matching designs across four different items, and keeping the style consistent across generations took six prompts and some luck. The clipart route gave us a whole themed collection from one designer, guaranteed to match.

AI edged ahead on originality — no other kid at the party would have the same dino — but matching sets are exactly what curated clipart collections are built for.

Winner: Tie, with a nod to clipart for full sets

The Licensing Wrinkle Nobody Talks About

Here's the part that surprised us most. Every clipart site we ranked has a license page you can actually read. AI generators? Commercial use terms vary wildly by platform, by subscription tier, and sometimes by what you typed into the prompt. Two of the three tools we tested required paid plans for commercial rights.

Free clipart with a clear license beat 'free' AI art with fine print more than once.

Final Score

Category Winner
Classroom worksheets Clipart
Cricut cuts Clipart
Etsy mockups AI
Church bulletins Clipart
Birthday party prints Tie

The verdict: AI is a fantastic supplement, especially for backgrounds and one-of-a-kind scenes. But for anything that needs to be cut, recolored, printed small, or licensed without a headache, the free clipart sites in our rankings still earn their spots. The archive isn't dead — it's just sharing the toolbox now.
